Organizing drive began in February, ended May 3
Workers at Yorkton Crossing Retirement Community in Yorkton, Sask., voted on May 27 to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
Yorkton Crossing is a private personal care home and offers independent living, assisted living and memory-care options. More than 50 full-time, part-time and casual employees will be covered under this new CUPE local, said the union.
These workers include resident assistants, licensed practical nurses, food service workers, maintenance and administrative staff.
“We would like to welcome workers at Yorkton Crossing Retirement Community into the largest health-care union in Canada,” said Guy Marsden, CUPE national representative.
In Saskatchewan, CUPE represents 14,000 health-care workers, including long-term care workers employed by the Saskatchewan Health Authority, as well as workers employed in personal care homes, said the union.
The organizing drive started in February and the mail-in ballot was counted on May 3, said CUPE.
The Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board certified CUPE as the bargaining agent for employees at Yorkton Crossing Retirement Community on May 17, said the union.
