Employees pick Canada's top workplaces in Queen’s University study
Canada's small and medium employers are learning from the past, as many organizations that have made the list as a best employer have moved up the rankings this year.
The annual study of Canada's 20 best small and medium employers is conducted by the Queen's Centre for Business Venturing (QCBV) at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., in conjunction with HR consulting firm Hewitt Associates. Canadian organizations with between 50 and 399 permanent employees are eligible to participate.
Several companies that made the list in 2006 are back in 2007 and have improved their position on the list, said Einar Westerlund, the study's projects director.
“This demonstrates that organizations are participating in this study and utilizing the results in order to increase employee engagement – the emotional and intellectual commitment employees have for their employer. High engagement is particularly important for attracting and retaining employees," said Westerlund.
This year, 71 organizations and nearly 13,000 employees took part in the survey.
“It’s this feedback from employees that determines the list of the year’s foremost smaller employers. We believe those that work for these organizations are in the best position to recognize a great employer," said Elspeth Murray, associate professor and director of QCBV.
