NDP economic critic wants province to focus on developing industries and jobs in research
Nova Scotia has become too reliant on call centres for jobs, according to members of the province’s New Democratic Party.
NDP economic critic Howard Epstein made the comments, reported by Broadcast News, after On-Line Support laid off two-thirds of its 150 staff in Kentville because it lost two key contracts.
The company, which opened its doors in 2000 with the promise of creating and maintaining 130 jobs for four years, received $509,000 in Nova Scotia government payroll rebates.
Epstein said the province should stop relying on call centres and concentrate on developing industries around research at the province’s universities or in the marine sector.
