New Brunswick launches new training program for public service managers

Modules include Aboriginal awareness, international development and strategic planning

The government of New Brunswick is opening up an innovative training program to all of its public service managers.

The program was initially created by the province’s Department of Training and Employment Development for its own employees and won an award last year from the Institute of Public Administration of Canada. It offers 14 modules delivered through a combination of classroom and online training.

The province’s Office of Human Resources is now taking over administration of the nine-month program and opening it up to existing and aspiring public service managers. It covers topics including Aboriginal awareness, international development and strategic planning and can accommodate up to 72 students in each training cycle.

“These training efforts are in keeping with our department mandate to assist in the recruitment, compensation and development of the staff necessary to provide top quality public services,” said Rodney Weston, New Brunswick’s human resources minister.

The University of New Brunswick is delivering the program in English from its Fredericton campus and the Université de Moncton is delivering the French program from its Moncton campus.

The new program is in addition to the four main executive development programs administered by the Office of Human Resources including: the machinery and process of government; working with others; information and information technology; and a coaching leaders program.
