Not as many jobs cut in July
Intel Corp’s chief executive, Craig Barrett, predicts that the high-tech industry will recover from its slowdown within the next three to six months.
Mr. Barrett’s optimism is based on his conclusion that the Internet will continue to stimulate growth in computing, communications and entertainment. He said that he expects that computer sales will increase as usual during the upcoming back-to-school and holiday buying seasons.
Mr. Barrett may well be right. Figures released July 27 by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., an international outplacement firm, reveal that dot.com providers slashed fewer jobs in July than during any other month since October 2000.
