CAW president says this will be his last term
Buzz Hargrove was once again named president of the Canadian Autoworkers Union (CAW). Hargrove has been president of the 265,000 member union since 1992, but said this three-year term will be his last.
The election was held July 17 in Vancouver. Hargrove's only opponent, Willie Lambert, a local union official in Ontario, withdrew from the race Wednesday, July 16. At that time he endorsed Hargrove.
Union spokesman Jim Pare said Lambert withrdew "in the interest of unity."
Hargrove said his goal over his final term is to maintain a tough, militant collective bargaining agenda as well as strong advocacy on social justice and community activism.
Hargrove celebrated his acclamation by proposing to long-time partner Denise Small in front of a crowd of 1,000 union members and supporter. Small, a mediation officer with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, accepted.
