Majority of Second Career participants find work
Ontario’s Second Career Program, which provides skills training and financial support to laid-off workers, has released the results of a survey of participants. More than nine in 10 (93 per cent) of respondents completed training and 63 per cent of those obtained employment. The most popular jobs are bookkeeper, heavy equipment operator, truck driver, community and social service worker and gasfitter.
stress-induced illness can give rise to compensation benefits: Court
The New Brunswick Court of Appeal has ruled federal government workers suffering from illnesses caused by a gradual onset of stress can potentially be covered by workers’ compensation benefits. However, the cause of the illness must be something that would negatively affect a reasonable person in the worker’s position. Claims caused by harassment might, therefore, be covered. (For more information see Stewart v. Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission, 2010 NBCA 67 (N.B.C.A.)
Yukon tweaking workers’ compensation legislation
The Yukon government has introduced a bill that could broaden the scope of workers’ compensation claims. Currently, the Workers’ Compensation Act states “an injury is presumed to be work-related if it arises out of and in the course of a worker’s employment.” Bill 93, the Miscellaneous Statute Law Amendment Act, 2010, would change the “and” to “or.” This would bring the Yukon’s legislation in line with most other workers’ compensation legislation in Canada. Bill 93 contains other small changes to the act as well.
