About 2,500 inspections expected to be carried out in 3-day blitz
A three-day inspection blitz of large trucks and buses starts in Ontario today.
The campaign for commercial vehicle safety runs from June 7-9. Trucks and buses will be randomly inspected for mechanical fitness, properly secured loads, correct driver qualifications and complete daily inspection of reports and logs.
In Ontario, unsafe vehicles are immediately removed from the road. Many offenses carry fines of up to $20,000 and up to $50,000 for wheel separation offences. Vehicles with serious brake, steering, wheel, tire and suspension defects can also be impounded for up to 60 days, according to the province.
This is the 23rd year Ontario has participated in this international safety event, during which about 2,500 inspections are usually conducted in the province. More than 150 government enforcement officers are participating in the blitz.
In 1997 there were 215 wheel separations reported in the province, compared to 47 occurrences in 2010.
