New technology to improve offshore training and safety

Simulation equipment first of its kind

The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, N.L., is launching new offshore training technology today.

The university will be the first institution in the world to use new simulation equipment that improves the safety of lifeboat training.

The equipment, called SurvivalQuest, was developed by Virtual Marine Technology in conjunction with a research and development team led by Brian Veitch, faculty of engineering and applied science at the university and Antonio Simoes Re of the National Research Council Institute of Ocean Technology.

Funding for the project came from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the provincial department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and Petroleum Research Atlantic Canada.
