Case involved 2 foreign workers killed in 2007
An engineering company operating near Fort McMurray, Alta., has been hit with a penalty of $1.5 million for a workplace safety violation.
Sinopec Shanghai Engineering Company Canada had pleaded guilty to three charges of failing to ensure the health and safety of workers under the Occupational Health and Safety Act after an accident in 2007 that killed two temporary foreign workers from China, along with injuring others.
It was given the maximum $500,000 fine for each charge. A judge ruled the company will pay a fine of $200,000 while the remaining $1.3 million will go to a new program teaching temporary foreign workers about their rights when it comes to safety on the job, according to media reports.
