Alberta introduces new workplace safety fines

First time province has ability to issue financial penalties

Employers and workers in Alberta will soon face a new system of workplace safety fines.

Approved on Sept. 6, employers and employees can be issued on-the-spot tickets totaling up to $500 if either party is caught violating safety regulations.

The government will also be able to apply administrative penalties of up to $10,000 for “repeat non-compliers,” according to the Calgary Herald. This is also the first time Alberta Occupational Health and Safety will have the capacity to issue monetary, the newspaper says.

Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan have similar systems in place.
