Bonnyville, Alta. firefighters quit after concerns about equipment safety
Workplace inspectors were in Bonnyville, Alta. last week after 30 volunteer firefighters walked off the job two weeks ago.
The firefighters said they were concerned over the safety of their equipment saying it was old and didn’t meet safety standards.
Firefighter James Sharun wrote a letter to the fire authority board outlining problems with maintenance and replacement of breathing gear and protective clothing. The letter was signed by 14 other firefighters. Sharun told CBC news he was fired from his volunteer position after sending the letter.
After a meeting last week, the board has asked Alberta Occupational Health and Safety do to a full inspection on all safety issues raised by the group.
