Postings for human resources roles up 134 per cent over past 2 years
Job postings for human resources positions in March were up 134 per cent compared to February 2020.
That’s much better than the increases in job postings in software development (122 per cent), construction (110 per cent) and loading and stocking (109 per cent), according to Indeed.
In January, HR also saw a 131-per-cent increase in job postings compared to two years earlier.
“Job postings in human resources are up by even more as employers look for workers to both facilitate the hiring process, and navigate questions around the reopening of workplaces,” says Brendon Bernard, senior economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab.
With governments easing on COVID-19 safety restrictions, Canadian employers are anticipating a prosperous hiring climate for the second quarter of this year.
Total Canadian job postings on Indeed were up 69 per cent on March 18, compared to early February 2020, a new pandemic-era high.
“Job postings are well above their February 2020 levels similarly to the economy-wide trend across a range of sectors,” says Bernard. “If last year’s developments are any indication, hiring appetite in these areas could pick up further as long as the public health situation doesn’t deteriorate.”
Employment climbed 337,000 (1.8 per cent) in February, easily offsetting losses seen in January.
Variation by industry, province
Food preparation and service (81 per cent), accounting (77 per cent), installation and maintenance (69 per cent) and administrative services (59 per cent) also improved. Meanwhile, sales (34 per cent), sports (25 per cent), beauty and wellness (nine per cent) and aviation (eight per cent) also saw increases.
Compared to November, job postings also rose 21 per cent, slightly better than the increases in installation and maintenance (20 per cent), software development (19 per cent), accounting (18 per cent) and construction (18 per cent).
However, aviation (32 per cent) saw the biggest increase in job postings through that period.
In setting up a new engineering hub in Canada, Meta (formerly Facebook) says it plans to create up to 2,500 new jobs over the next few years, with recruitment already underway.
Increases in job postings are above the national level in Prince Edward Island (123 per cent), Nova Scotia (90 per cent), Newfoundland and Labrador (85 per cent), Alberta (84 per cent), Saskatchewan (82 per cent) and New Brunswick (77 per cent), “perhaps partly because job vacancy rates in these provinces were generally a bit below the national average prior to the crisis,” says Bernard.
Meanwhile, increases are below the national level in Ontario (68 per cent), Quebec (64 per cent), Manitoba (59 per cent) and British Columbia (56 per cent).
