Proposed legislation would require retirement at age 60
A mandatory retirement age of 60 for firefighters whose job requires them to fight fires was recently introduced by the government of Ontario.
The proposal is in Bill 181, the Fire Protection and Prevention Amendment Act, 2011 , which would standardize retirement age for firefighters across the province. The bill received first reading on April 18.
Municipal governments would have two years to change their collective agreements to include a mandatory retirement provision if the bill passes. Ontario eliminated mandatory retirement almost five years ago. The exception is for jobs where mandatory retirement is a bona fide occupational requirement.
