Strike would result in back-to-work legislation
The union that represents Canada’s lettercarriers and mail sorters is claiming that Canada Post wants to provoke a general strike.
To date, the union has been holding rotating strikes; the most recent covers 10 cities.
But, according to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), Canada Post refused an offer to end the strikes if guarantees in the expired collective agreement were continued.
Now, management has begun to reduce hours for employees in locations that are not on strike, citing reduced volumes of mail. However, the CUPW responds that, “Despite mail piling up in its plants, Canada Post is unnecessarily reducing service across the country.” Canada Post, the union feels, is trying to provoke a general strike that would result in back-to-work legislation.
Late last week, Canada Post issued a news release that announced that negotiations were stalled and that the sides were “far apart on several fundamental issues.”
