Teachers to rally at legislature urging the government to meet contract demands
Saskatchewan teachers will take a study day and hold a rally in front of the provincial Legislative Assembly on Thursday, May 5.
The 12,000 teachers intend to get the government back to the bargaining table. They have been without a contract since August 2010.
Last week, the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation announced that 95 per cent of the province’s teachers were in favour of job action to support their contract demands.
The Saskatchewan School Boards Association and the provincial government are offering a 5.5 per cent wage increase over three years, while the union wants a 12 per cent raise over one year. The union says teachers in Saskatchewan have the lowest average salaries in the Prairie provinces.
The union has given 48 hours’ notice before their withdrawal of services, as had been promised when the job action vote was announced last week.
Classes will resume as usual on Friday.
