Looking to improve wages, working conditions: Union
More than 700 workers at Polar Pak in Brampton, Ontario are amongst the newest members of United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW) Local 175 after a majority voted to join the union Aug. 26.
Spread over five different facilities in Brampton, Polar Pak manufactures plastic containers, serving-ware and cutlery for the food service, food processor, bakery, grocery, catering, take-out, retail and hospitality markets.
Workers joined the union to improve their wages and working conditions as well as gain job security and just-cause protection, said the UFCW.
"The workers at Polar Pak stayed united and held strong during the process to achieve fairness at work," said Shawn Haggerty, UFCW Canada Local 175 president. "We look forward to helping these new members improve their working conditions."
The union said it plans to soon begin bargaining with the employer.
