More than 140 other employees already unionized in 2018
Workers at Olameter in Chatham-Kent and Middlesex and Elgin Counties in Ontario joined United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 175 on May 21 after voting to join the union.
The organizing campaign lasted two weeks and brings more Olameter meter readers to UFCW Local 175. The new members will join more than 140 other Olameter employees who join UFCW 175 in December 2018.
Since that certification, the union has been able to prevent changes to the working conditions of members and the same protections will apply for the newest group of Olameter employees, said the union.
Workers at Olameter in Chatham-Kent and Middlesex and Elgin Counties cited health and safety issues, wages, pensions, vision care coverage, and addressing issues with management as primary reasons for joining the union, said UFCW.
UFCW Canada Locals 175 and 633 represent more than 70,000 Ontarians.
