More vacations, longer leaves part of agreement: UFCW
Janitorial workers at the GDI Sussex Centre in Mississauga, Ont. achieved a new union contract on Oct. 31 that provides wage gains and improved benefits.
To reach an agreement, the union negotiating committee requested the help of a conciliation officer, says the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada.
Items in contention for the employees included wages and achieving health benefits for the first time in this agreement, says the union.
As part of the new contract, wages will increase for all employees by $0.25 per hour in the first and second years of the contract, followed by an increase of $0.23 per hour in year three, says UFCW.
The employer will also contribute $0.87 per hour worked toward the employees’ dental plan. In the third year of the agreement, members will qualify for health benefits, says the union.
Bereavement language improves to include grandchildren under the three-day provision. Employees are now entitled to four weeks’ paid vacation after 10 years of service with the company. In addition, employees benefit from an additional floater day to bring them to three in total, says UFCW.
The three-year agreement covers 43 full-time employees working at the centre, says the union.
