Newsreader pre-empts news with on-air rant against bosses before walking away
It may have been a slow news day. For one Norwegian radio journalist, the top story of the day was that she’d had enough of her job.
Pia Beathe Pedersen, a 43-year-old reporter for Norway’s public broadcaster NRK in Oslo, was assigned to reading the news on Sept. 11. However, when she came on, she refused to read any stories and instead went on a two-minute rant about the working conditions at the station.
While on the air, Pedersen said her bosses put too much pressure on her and that she was “quitting and walking away.” She also said she “wanted to be able to eat properly again and be able to breathe.” She followed up her announcement by saying there wouldn’t be any news that day and “nothing important has happened.”
Pedersen had worked for NRK for 18 months. An NRK spokesperson said her on-air behaviour and resignation came as a surprise.
