'We get sh*t done': Step inside Flygreen's 'warrior-style' culture

Sitting at the heart of any successful organization is its culture – a unique collection of beliefs, values and practices that not only showcases what a brand is really all about but also helps to attract the best and brightest people on the market.

For Flygreen, a North American private jet charter company, their culture is a perfect blend of warrior-like mentality, determination, passion and purpose – all of which are embodied by their people every single day. Speaking to Canadian HR Reporter, Ryan Saroli, co-founder and VP of sales at Flygreen, says that their values echo those of Momentum Ventures, their parent company.

“We are warriors,” he says. “We face challenges with courage, determination, and passion. We stand strong and united in purpose. We are strategic; this is where thoughtful planning meets execution. We aim to see the bigger picture, navigating our path with precision. We get sh*t done; we have a bias towards action. We believe in results, not excuses.”

‘Walking the walk’

What’s more, Flygreen doesn’t just tout these values, they instill them throughout the company to ensure that they’re not just ‘talking the talk’, they’re walking that walk. And in today’s market, the alure of a powerful and authentic brand in attracting top tier talent can’t be understated.

According to research from CareerArc, 75% of jobseekers consider an employer’s brand before they’ve even applied for the job, with 52% of candidates first snooping out a company’s webpage and social media accounts to learn more about an organization.

For Flygreen, their success here really speaks for itself. When Flygreen launched in February 2023, they had a grand total of two employees. Now, just a little more than a year later, they boast 24 employees spanning five departments, including Sales, Tech, Human Resources, Finance, and PR & Marketing. And technology played a large role in their overall success – for both internal and external growth.

“At Flygreen’s core, we are a tech company,” adds Saroli. “We leverage technology to not only offer our customers the best experience, but our team members as well. Our technology team built an in-house sourcing platform, entitled JETPRO, that refines the aircraft selection process for our Jet Charter Executives. This was a game changer because not only did it show what our tech team is capable of, but it ensures that our Jet Charter Executives are consistently equipped with the most up-to-date information to better serve our clients, fostering efficiency.”

But a good candidate fit has to go both ways – what’s a perfect culture for one jobseeker might not be an ideal fit for another. At Flygreen, they’re looking for alignment in mindset, values, vision and goals. And qualifications aren’t a requirement.

“Flygreen chooses to look beyond the resume,” says Bianca Cuffaro, HRBP at Flygreen. “Interviews and assessments are designed to gauge passion, drive, and how applicants think and approach challenges. This method helps us understand their potential fit within our team and alignment with our company culture.

“We prioritize soft skills such as communication, adaptability, problem-solving, and teamwork in our hiring process. While education and experience are considered, we delve deeper into the candidate's personality, mindset, and potential to contribute to our team dynamics.”

‘Everyone has their hands in different pieces of the pie’

Furthermore, Cuffaro says that they’re open to hiring new graduates – because what they lack in experience they more than make up for in enthusiasm.

“They bring with them fresh perspectives and innovation to our company, as they are up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies,” she explains. “They are highly adaptable and eager to learn, offering long-term potential for growth within the company, contributing to lower turnover rates and a strong talent pipeline.”

For graduates looking to really learn on the job, and experience a hands-on approach to personal growth and development, Flygreen could be the ideal choice.

“For example, our sales team hits the ground running with business development, while receiving one-on-one coaching and real-time feedback, and group training,” explains Cuffaro. “This ensures that each of our Jet Charter Executives is knowledgeable in every facet of the private aviation world.

“We are still in the growth phase, which allows everyone on the team, throughout all departments, to have their hands in different pieces of the pie; feedback from one team to another is given, tested, and implemented.”

An enviable perk of Flygreen’s is their yearly continuing education allowance for all employees, which enables them to participate in classes, courses, seminars and events directly related to their field that will help them advance and excel in their career.

“Career growth, learning development, and coaching are vital because it sets our employees up for success,” adds Cuffaro. “The private aviation market is so niche, leaving so much room for learning and we want our employees to capitalize on this.”

‘Pivoting without the burden of bureaucracy’

For Cuffaro and Saroli, their passion for their organization is palpable, with both saying they’ve been offered innumerable opportunities for personal and professional growth – all while working with a dynamic, innovative and go-getting team.

“Working for Flygreen is a dynamic and fulfilling experience, as it has allowed me to be part of the company’s growth and success from the ground up,” adds Cuffaro. “What truly sets Flygreen apart is our shared focus on innovation and our dedication to providing exceptional travel experiences.”

And Saroli concurs, telling CHHR that he truly values his relationship with his colleagues – as well as working in a model that allows for autonomy.

“One of the standout features of Flygreen is our ability to pivot quickly without the burden of bureaucracy, which fosters a fast-paced and innovative environment,” he says. “Our talented tech team plays a crucial role in this, allowing us to develop forward-thinking technology rapidly and efficiently. Being part of a company that supports creativity and collaboration makes every day rewarding and drives me to contribute to our shared success.”
