Rate will grow by 3.9 per cent effective June 1
An order in council has confirmed upcoming increases to British Columbia’s minimum wage rate this year, according to the provincial government.
On June 1, 2024, B.C.’s general minimum wage will increase by 3.9 per cent, from $16.75 to $17.40 per hour. The increase is consistent with B.C.’s average rate of inflation in 2023.
The alternate minimum rates for residential caretakers, live-in home-support workers and camp leaders will also receive the same 3.9 per cent increase on June 1.
Meanwhile, on Dec. 31, 2024, the minimum piece rates for 15 hand-harvested crops will also increase by the same percentage.
Minimum wage keeps pace with inflation
B.C. first announced the increases to the minimum pay rate in the province back in February. The changes follow legislative changes that ensure these wages keep pace with inflation, according to the B.C. government.
“The changes align with government priorities to help lift more people out of poverty, make life more affordable and build a strong and fair economy for B.C.,” said the government.
Ontario's minimum wage is also set to rise to $17.20 per hour, effective Oct. 1, 2024, marking a 3.9% increase from the current rate.
In April, the uptick on the federal minimum wage to $17.30 per hour from $16.65 per hour took effect. That coincided with minimum wage increases in all Atlantic Canadian provinces and Yukon.
