Chipotle gives Ontario, B.C. staff salary bump

Chipotle is giving employees in Ontario and British Columbia a boost in pay.

The employer is pushing minimum incomes to $15 per hour for those working in Ontario restaurants and $16 per hour for those working in B.C. branches. The minimum wage in Ontario is $14.25 (rising to $14.35 as of Oct. 1, 2021 and in B.C., it’s $15.20.

In July, a $15-per-hour federal minimum wage for Canada was officially approved in Ottawa.

Chipotle also says that crew members can advance to a restaurateur position, the highest general manager position, with a salary of more than $100,000 in as little as three-and-a-half years.

"We are committed to providing industry-leading benefits and accelerated growth opportunities, and we hope to attract even more talent by showcasing the potential income that can be achieved in a few short years," says Anat Davidzon, managing director for Canada at Chipotle. "Chipotle is looking for people who are authentic, passionate and want to help cultivate a better world through real food and real personal development."

More than one in five (21 per cent) of Canadian workers plan to look for a new role in the next several months, according to a report from Robert Half.

To boost its recruiting efforts, Chipotle also introduced a $200 referral bonus for employees who refer a crew member, and a $750 referral bonus for employees who refer an apprentice or a general manager in Canada.

Two experts spoke with Canadian HR Reporter recently about how to entice valuable employees to stay when they’re tempted to leave.
