Artificial intelligence (AI)’s impact on human resources should be one of the priorities for HR teams this year, according to one expert.

“I say that not because of how that will impact the profession of HR with respect to their jobs. Yes, there'll be some effect. But more importantly, what will it mean to them with respect to the changes and disruption that it will cause?” says Tony Ariganello, CEO of CPHR BC & Yukon, CEO of CPHR Canada, president of World Federation of People in talking with Sarah Dobson, managing editor at Key Media.

Currently, it is still not known what jobs AI will disrupt, he says.

“We're looking at white collar jobs and blue collar jobs being disrupted. Jobs that we never thought would be eliminated can be eliminated. And so I see it as a paradigm shift; we can't just say, ‘Ýes, we'll eliminate all these jobs, it'll create a whole bunch of new ones’. We don't even know what kind of jobs AI will create.”

Overall, AI will cause “chaos, some scrambling and some reacting”on HR teams “as opposed to being at the forefront in terms of being proactive,” says Ariganello.

One in two Canadians have never used AI at work, according to a previous report.

Another point of focus for HR is filling in job positions amid a labour shortage, says Ariganello. He points to a slowing birth rate in Canada which leads to fewer talent being available to fill in different roles.

“If we don't look at bringing in immigration and skilled immigration, we're going to have a huge challenge,” he says.

“I think something that we must pay attention to, and of course, is on the minds of HR practitioners everywhere.”

There has been a marked increase in the hiring of temporary foreign workers (TFWs) to fill business and administration roles in Alberta, according to a previous report.

In the video, Ariganello also talked about his own professional journey and the state of the HR profession.
